French Onion Soup Recipe

This French onion soup recipe is perfect for winter nights. Top the soup with a piece of toasted bread and some cheese of preference, but there are many other variations that you can try, as mentioned above. It's easy to make with or without wine.

  • Mandoline slicer optional
  • Dutch Oven


  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 5 yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 0.5 cup dry white wine
  • 6 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp pepper


  • 4 bread toasted
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese shredded


  • Melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat in a large pot or Dutch oven.
  • Add the onions and garlic and cook until they are soft and translucent.
  • Add the wine and cook for a few minutes until it has evaporated.
  • Add the beef broth and sugar and season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the soup to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 1 hour.
  • To serve, ladle the soup into 4 bowls and top with a piece of toasted bread and some shredded Gruyere cheese.

    • Serve this soup with a side salad or some crusty bread.
    • You could add some cooked chicken or beef to the soup for a more filling meal.
