- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 5 yellow onions thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 0.5 cup dry white wine
- 6 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp sugar
- 0.5 tsp salt
- 0.25 tsp pepper
- 4 bread toasted
- 1 cup Gruyere cheese shredded
Melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat in a large pot or Dutch oven.
Add the onions and garlic and cook until they are soft and translucent.
Add the wine and cook for a few minutes until it has evaporated.
Add the beef broth and sugar and season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the soup to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 1 hour.
To serve, ladle the soup into 4 bowls and top with a piece of toasted bread and some shredded Gruyere cheese.
- Serve this soup with a side salad or some crusty bread.
- You could add some cooked chicken or beef to the soup for a more filling meal.
Store this french onion soup in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
