Apple pie is a delicious dessert that can be enjoyed any time of year. This recipe is for a traditional apple pie, made with a flaky pastry crust and a sweet, spiced filling. Apple pie is perfect for holiday gatherings or anytime you crave a warm, comforting slice.
Ingredients for The Pie Crust
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 egg large
- 1 pure vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting
- 1/2 salt
Ingredients for The Filling
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 ground cinnamon
- 1/4 ground ginger
- 1/8 ground nutmeg
- 6 cup thinly sliced peeled tart apples
- 1 lemon juice
Preparation of The Pie Crust
In a large bowl, add in the butter and sugar. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla.
Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until dough comes together. Divide dough in half; flatten each into a disk.
Wrap each in plastic; refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to 2 days).
When you are ready to use, on a lightly floured surface, roll one disk of dough to a 1/8-in.-thick circle; transfer to a 9-in.pie plate. Trim even with rim.
Refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes.
Preparation of The Apple Filling
Combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Add apples; toss to coat.
Sprinkle with lemon juice. Set aside.
Assembling The Apple Pie
Once you have prepared the dough and filling, it is time to assemble and bake the pie.
Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Trim, seal, and flute edge. Cut slits on top. Beat remaining egg; brush over crust.
Bake the pie for 50 minutes to 1 hour, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. (More if you think the filling is too runny).
If the crust begins to get too brown, cover with foil.
Cool on a wire rack for at least 1 hour before serving.
Serve your apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. You can also enjoy it plain, or with a cup of coffee or tea.
Apple pie can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge. If you plan on storing it at room temperature, do so for no more than 2 days.
If you would like to store your pie in the fridge, do so for no longer than 5 days. When you are ready to eat, simply reheat in a 350-degree oven for about 15-20 minutes.
Apple pie can also be frozen. Wrap the pie tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store it in the freezer for up to 2 months. When you are ready to eat, thaw overnight in the fridge and then reheat according to the above instructions.
