Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (28-ounce)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 can tomato sauce (15-ounce)
  • 12 lasagna noodles cooked according to package instructions
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 3/4 grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F or 190°C.
  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, cook beef, onion, and garlic until beef is browned. Drain fat.
  • Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, black pepper, oregano, basil, and thyme. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together tomato sauce and water. Set aside.

  • To assemble lasagna, spread 1/2 cup of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Top with 3 noodles, spread with 1 cup of ricotta cheese, and sprinkle with 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese.
  • Repeat layers of noodles, meat sauce, ricotta cheese, and Parmesan cheese until all ingredients are used.
  • Top with mozzarella cheese.
  • Bake for 25 minutes, or until lasagna is hot and bubbly. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestions

Serve with a salad and garlic bread for a complete meal.
  • For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey for the beef and use low-fat cheese.
  • For a vegetarian lasagna, omit the meat and double the number of vegetables in the filling.
